The Network

Our fibre footprint

There is upwards of 23,500 kilometres of fibre optic cable in the wider Telecom network throughout New Zealand.  For a detailed overview of our existing fibre network visit www.broadbandmap.govt.nz and click on the Telecom Group: Fibre Optic Network option.

A large amount of this fibre is located within Chorus' local access network and the reach of this fibre network is growing each week. Our fibre to the node (FTTN) project, for example, is adding a further 2,500kms of fibre over the next four years. That's greater than the distance from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

In Auckland, for example, the fibre to the node programme will add 1,200 kms of fibre to the existing fibre network of 2,350 kms by the end of 2011, while the current network of 930 kms of fibre in Christchurch will grow by a further 205 kms.

Chorus also lays fibre as part of its ongoing upgrades of the wider network. For example, about 20kms of fibre was laid in 2008 as part of a $1.5million project to enhance network coverage and performance for 150 customers in the northern part of the Coromandel Peninsula.

We're laying fibre optic cable because it enables large amounts of data to be delivered further and faster than the copper cables that traditionally deliver telecommunications services.  About 600 fibre-fed exchanges have business fibre connections generally available on request within 30 working days.

Fibre to the home

#

Although the fibre to the node project is extending the reach of fibre deeper into suburban New Zealand by connecting to more roadside cabinets, the next challenge is to lay fibre to replace the ‘last mile' of copper cables which connect New Zealand homes.

Connecting fibre to the home is a challenge being grappled with around the world because the cost of laying fibre in a suburban setting can be significant - about two thirds of the cost is incurred just in digging trenches for the fibre. Our ultimate goal is to reach the vast majority of homes with fibre and our ongoing fibre network developments are a natural progression in that direction.

Chorus is busy deploying fibre optic cable directly to new homes in large suburban developments around New Zealand. In June 2008, Telecom Wholesale launched a service trial with WorldxChange Communications which operates across a fibre to the home network laid by Chorus. Developers, builders and homeowners wanting more information about fibre to the home developments should visit www.brightspark.org.nz
