When you think of escaping to the bach, broadband probably isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. But with the Internet now a key part of our leisure time, more and more Kiwis are choosing to stay connected while on holiday.
Supply and demand
Chorus recently teamed up with Bookabach to survey more than 7,000 bach owners and renters from across New Zealand. We asked questions about what they want from broadband at a bach, and how they’re currently using it.
People enjoy staying connected when they’re on holiday, according to our survey results. A substantial amount of holiday time is being spent online, with 71% connecting more than once a day. In fact, 56% of those who own or manage baches said they surf the ‘net for more than an hour each day. But with half reporting that they don’t have a broadband connection at their bach just yet, many Kiwi holiday-makers will be churning through mobile data to meet their online needs.
Broadband bliss
From keeping in touch with loved ones on social media to streaming music or a favourite television show, broadband has become an integral part of our downtime. Alongside, keeping connected to others via email and social media, our survey found one in four already stream music, TV and movies at the bach. What’s also clear is that broadband is helpful when planning leisure activities. Our survey showed Kiwis like to be connected to check the weather and surf reports on holiday.
Endless summer
The majority of people (85%) also said they could work from the bach if they had broadband, which would allow them to get away from home for longer.
Owners are more likely to extend their holiday, with 45% saying they’d stay at the bach for a week or longer if their broadband connection allowed them to work remotely. Bach use by owners is already high, with nearly half (48%) getting away once a quarter or once a month, indicating a broadband connection would be well used.
