Above and Below
Above and Below, the latest Auckland mural, is designed to show layers of New Zealand natural history.
The idea is based on the geographic cross-section diagrams often found in children's textbooks, however, artist Colleen Pugh says this artwork goes from the earth's core to the galaxy above.
"The fossils are based on real samples found in Aotearoa, as are the illustrated artifacts.
"There's a layer showing native bush that moves into the Southern Apes, the final layer depicts the night sky and includes the Matariki constellation on the top.
"As these earth cross-sections are mostly shown as cubes, I believe this idea has translated well to this Chorus cabinet."
