Whether avoiding the rush hour commute, doing the school run, or extending your time at the bach, there are many reasons why remote working has risen in popularity in recent years. And with New Zealand being one of a handful of countries offering Gigabit broadband and 80% of the country having access to super-fast VDSL or ultra-fast fibre broadband, working remotely has now become a viable option for most Kiwis.
A growing trend
An increasing number of New Zealanders are opting for remote working. A survey released by Horizon Research in November 2015 found 30% of New Zealand employees were working full or part time from home or other remote locations - that’s double what it was in 2006. What’s more, 39% of employed adults surveyed said their job could be done remotely, and 68% of those not currently working remotely wanted to.

A computer and a good broadband connection are the only tools you need to work from home. The better your broadband the more efficiently you’ll be able to work so check here to see whether you’re on the best broadband available at your place.
Aiding the shift towards remote working is virtual desktop technology which enables you to log into your work network from home so you can access your desktop and everything on it just as you would if you were actually in the office. If your company doesn’t have virtual desktop technology, apps such as Google Drive allowing you and your colleagues to share, save and edit files securely. You get 15GB storage for free and you can purchase more if you need it.
To make sure your broadband plan gives you enough data for both work and play, we recommend an unlimited data plan so you always have plenty left to stream your favourite shows once you clock out for the day. Your broadband provider can help you out there.
Remote working has the potential to do a lot more than avoid the morning commute. As technology continually evolves and matures, remote working can remove the need for employees to cluster to expensive cities just to work. It will mean people can spend more time with family and there are positive health implications too.
World-class broadband technology is accessible to most New Zealand homes and businesses so working from home is a realistic proposition these days. Next time you’re cursing the traffic, or rushing to day care have a think about joining the trend towards working remotely.
