Providing fibre in schools

Fibre connections for the future of our country are Chorus’ priority. We aim to have 98 per cent of schools across New Zealand connected to fibre with broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps by 2016.

Connecting your school
Chorus has an ambitious plan to deliver fibre to the gate of every school possible by 2016. For some schools, this is easy as it is often an extension of the work we are already undertaking as part of the fibre roll out. In rural and remote areas this can be a lot more challenging as we dig trenches and lay cables over large distances and varied terrain.

Check our list of school delivery dates to see if you’re ready to be connected.

Once fibre has been laid to the gate, you can order a service with a broadband provider or with Network for Learning. Click on your region below to see which providers offer services to schools. Once your order has been placed, one of our Chorus technicians will complete a site visit to determine the best way to get fibre from the gate to the classroom. Our technician will work with your staff to prepare an install plan that works with the school’s current communications infrastructure and type of service desired.

Broadband providers for rural schools
Chorus is determined to deliver better broadband services to all schools, ensuring that rural schools don’t miss out. Over 1,000 rural schools will be able to access our fibre network by the end of 2016 as part of the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) rollout.

A small percentage of schools, 2.3 per cent, are in areas of New Zealand that are too remote for fibre. But we have plans to improve broadband services either via wireless or satellite services.
