New Zealand's Ultra-Fast Broadband programme (UFB) is connecting fibre to your street, home, business, local school and medical facility.
UFB is changing the way New Zealanders work, live and play. Fibre optic cables deliver large amounts of data further and faster than the copper cables that traditionally deliver telecommunications services. Rolling out fibre will ensure our broadband experience is world class, letting you access media rich services like internet television and high definition video conferencing.
We have completed the rollout in Oamaru, Ashburton, Blenheim and Timaru is almost finished as well.
Chorus is the Government's largest UFB partner contracted to deliver UFB to over 830,000 properties - that's almost 70% of the entire UFB deployment.
It's a massive job laying thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable and ducting and will take until the end of 2019 to complete.
Our UFB network deployment continues to be ahead of schedule with fibre passing about 312,000 premises at 31 December 2014 - this means 421,000 end users are within reach of UFB. Fibre connections have also grown to 47,000.
Where we're rolling out UFB
We're deploying UFB to over 70% of New Zealand. If your area is not on our map, please go to Crown Fibre Holdings to find out who is delivering your UFB.
UFB rollout progress by area as at 31 December 2014
Areas outside our UFB deployment area include: Whangarei and Kaipara, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Tokoroa, Hawera, Cambridge and Te Awamutu and in the South Island: Christchurch, Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Lincoln, Prebbleton and Rolleston.
If you want to connect to our new fibre network, enter your address in the Check your broadband search bar at the top of this page. If our map indicates you have access to fibre, contact your broadband provider to order UFB. If your current provider isn't offering services in your area, you can find one that does.
We book an appointment to come and discuss installing fibre to your property.
Funding the UFB rollout
Laying close to 70% of New Zealand's fibre network is a huge financial undertaking.
Crown Fibre Holdings (CFH), our Government partner in the UFB public/private partnership, invests directly in Chorus as the UFB network is deployed in the form of non-voting equity and debt securities. These operate such that Chorus may return funds to CFH from 2025, with all funds likely to be returned to CFH by 2036.
