Why VDSL?

1

It’s faster because it’s part fibre

VDSL uses our fibre network to get broadband to a cabinet near your home and then the copper network from the cabinet to your house.

2

Upgrading is easy

Simply call your broadband provider and ask for VDSL. They’ll upgrade your plan and send you out a new modem.

3

A better online experience

VDSL supports activities like streaming high definition TV, video calling, or uploading photos, with less buffering than basic broadband.

Vectored VDSL - a faster more reliable connection

We’ve been working hard to upgrade parts of our copper network. Once completed more than 190,000 Kiwis will be able to access our best copper broadband connection – ‘vectored VDSL’ (the technical term). Put simply, vectored VDSL is a technology upgrade at your local telecommunications cabinet that improves the speed and stability of a VDSL connection by reducing interference. Think of it like noise cancelling headphones blocking out any noise.

Why do you want a faster more stable connection?

Improvements in speed and stability means less waiting for things to load, and less buffering so you can enjoy your favourite TV shows or movies online without interruption. During testing of the new technology the average network connection speed increased by 18%*. What performance improvement you’ll experience at your place depends on a couple of things:

  1. How far away you are from the local cabinet. With copper connections speed does decrease the further away you are.
  2. Having a vectoring compatible modem. Most modems are compatible with vectoring but if you’re unsure, check with your broadband provider or check a list of capable types here.

If you want to know more about the technical changes you can read our VDSL vectoring white paper here.

*VDSL vectoring field trial results from April 2017. 18% is the average network connection speed increase seen across the full trial sample of 4800 standard VDSL lines.
