The case for 100Mbps (or more)

Traditionally, you may have chosen your broadband plan based on the amount of data you need each month. With fibre you’ll also need to consider the speed of your connection.
If you’ve had an ADSL or VDSL broadband connection at home previously, choosing a plan based on speed could be a new, and possibly confusing, concept.
To help, Kurt Rodgers, one of our technology experts, explains fibre speeds – and the benefits of a 100Mbps connection – in the video below but here are two key points to remember:
- How much: 60GB, 80GB, or unlimited plans all relate to how much data you can use on your connection in a month. (As an aside: each hour of HD video uses between 2GB and 3GB which on a 60GB data cap is less than one hour per day, and that’s without any other web browsing – read more here – so it’s fairly unsurprising that New Zealand households are using an average 100GB of broadband data every month.)
- How fast: 30Mbps, 100Mbps, 200Mbps or 1Gbps are all about how quickly data moves across your connection
To really get the most from your fibre connection, we recommend talking to your broadband provider about an unlimited plan at speeds of 100Mbps or more. The higher speed means you’ll be able to do more, and do it faster – a win-win. And a faster fibre plan isn’t necessarily going to cost you more either – many providers currently offer 100Mbps plans at a similar cost to their entry level options.
Use our broadband checker to see if fibre is available at your address, then contact your broadband provider to place an order.
