What is a high load Permit and when do I need to get one?

A High Load Permit may be required if you are moving large structures by road. Typical high loads include houses, boats, machinery, and industrial structures. These permits are issued by NZTA, who may require written approval from Chorus before issuing them.

Loads up to 4.3 metres high are legally allowed on the road and do not require an NZTA High Load Permit or any Chorus approval. There are differing requirements for loads higher than 4.3 metres which are dependent on the height of the load:

  • For loads between 4.3 and 5.0 metres high: An NZTA High Load Permit is not required, however the High Load Operator needs to confirm if there are any Chorus network obstructions – e.g. overhead cables - impacted on the route. If the route is not clear, then you must contact Chorus to request an approval. Chorus will arrange an escort and manage the obstructions as required
  • For Loads above 5.0 metres high: An NZTA High Load Permit and Chorus approval is required in all cases where the load is above 5.0 metres. The High Load Operator needs to confirm if there are any Chorus network obstructions – e.g. overhead cables – that could be impacted on the route and notify Chorus.  Chorus will check the network that has been identified on the proposed route and if the load is clear to the height required, an approval letter will be issued.  If the route is not clear, we will arrange an escort and manage the obstructions. An approval letter stating that an escort is required will be issued.

Where Chorus needs to manage obstructions by dropping or raising Chorus network in order for the load to proceed an escort is required, and charges will apply. These are normally charged on a time, materials, and vehicle basis. The High Load approval will not be issued until the escort quote has been signed and accepted by the customer.

How do I request Chorus approval?

To request an approval letter, or a quote for an indication of costs, please complete the High Load Approval Request form or call us on 0800 822 003.

This application must be submitted with a minimum of 5 clear working days’ notice.  All loads may be subject to a route check.

If the proposed route is free from obstructions a High Load approval letter will be issued stating, no escort is required.  If the proposed route is not free from obstructions, we will issue a quote informing you of the costs that will manage the obstructions identified.

A copy of the approval letter will be emailed to you and it must be carried by the transporting vehicle.

If you have any issues with the High Load Approval Request form please call the Network Protection Group on 0800 822 003 or email us at npg@chorus.co.nz
